Gaia Sagrada Facilites
We like our creature comforts and we plan to keep them during the world changes! Find out more about how we plan to do that and what they are!
What’s At Gaia Sagrada?
Community Center
In the community center you can use the yoga room, check your emails, sit on a couch by the woodstove, watch the fire, and be at ease. The community center is surrounded by gardens and patios and you can always make a cup of tea. We have an acoustic music room and library in the Community Center as well.
Meeting Hall
Our meeting hall can seat 150 people and about half that doing yoga. It’s pretty big! It’s always warm since it gets a lot of sun exposure. We also have a huge woodstove in there should we ever need to heat it up, but we haven’t ever had to do that yet. The sun keeps it warmer than we expected it to. We have yoga mats there, a fireplace and there is a whole electric band set up in case anyone feels like doing a spontaneous jam! (Drum set, guitars, bass, keyboards, mics, PA system)
Dining area
Enjoy our outdoor dining near the outdoor fireplace and under the white fairy lights. We have beautiful patio or you can even sit in the garden if you want. There is enough space that you can sit by yourself or with the group, whichever you prefer.
Library
We have a small library of books you’re welcome to borrow and read during your stay. All we ask is that you return the books in good shape before you leave. If you would like to donate one or two, it will bless the next person who comes through looking for some juicy reading!
Steam Room
We have a steam room available for your health and rejuvenation endeavors. It is on for certain hours of the day, specifically during free time in the afternoons and evenings. Sit in the steam room for a while, then take a cool dip or jump in the hot tub, very good for your health!
Hot Tub
Enjoy a relaxed half hour or so in the hot tubs surrounded by nature. Loosen up your muscles before a massage or have a conversation with new friends in soothing water.
Hiking
There are many trails on the property, as well as on the dirt roads in the community around us. One could enjoy long walks in forests, fields, and country roads. The views in every direction are amazing and it is always lush and green in Ecuador. There is never snow and there is never dry or humid heat, just green! Perhaps that’s why Ecuador is so healing.
No Mosquitos!
What more needs to be said? We are just above the mosquitos and bugs elevation!
Meditation & Hammock Spots
There are many areas to gaze at the scenery of Gaia Sagrada. There are benches and sitting areas everywhere. Just go on the trails, take a walk, and you will find them. We have hammocks everywhere!
Campfires, Conversations & Music
These happen all the time at Gaia Sagrada! People bring their guitars and instruments, sing, or just enjoy conversation by the fire. It changes with different groups of people as to what is going on at the campfire. Bring your guitar or other instruments if you want to have some campfire fun, or play ours.
Internet
Bring your laptop for wifi access in the community center area. If you need to transfer documents from your laptop to a computer in the city, we suggest you bring a flash drive with you, as we won’t be able to print anything out for you. For a lot more information about internet and internet speeds, please see our Internet Facilities page.
Laundry Service
We provide a laundry service at $5/load for wash, dry, and fold.
We Love Hot Showers!
In these world changes there are going to be some challenges to keeping the creature comforts, especially if the grid goes down. We don’t think we will lose the hydroelectric grids in Ecuador, because Ecuador is not going to be as hard hit as the First World Nations. However, you just never know these days!
At this time we run our showers with propane gas tanks, but we are now building passive solar hot water showers so no matter what, we have hot water for our showers and the kitchens. We are also doing workshops to teach the indigenous community how to do this at their own homes.
It’s so EASY! And simple! All it takes is creating a box for all the tubes on a sun-facing side of a roof, painting it black, connecting and painting all the black tubes, and enclosing the box on the top with glass (or micah, which looks like plastic but isn’t plastic, micah will withstand the heat which goes up to 200+ degrees Fahrenheit.)
That’s it! That’s all it takes! We have lots of sun-facing roofs on just about every building. No energy needed since the Ecuador sun at this elevation is quite intense. Even on a cloudy day we will have hot water!
Cooking
We LOVE to eat good food, and cooking is of the utmost importance! Right now we cook all our food with propane gas, and we have hundreds of gas tanks stored so we could probably cook for a couple years just with that alone as long as everyone uses the solar showers.
However, again! You just never know what can happen these days! So we have a back up plan. Rocket Stoves! Have you ever heart of them? They are super cool!
The fire shoots up through the hole like a fire chimney, concentrating all the heat into one place, and it works just like a burner on any gas stove! This is how we plan to cook the big pots of food for the community when we have the soup kitchen for our neighbors! Cool huh? This way fire for cooking is not wasting large amounts of wood.
Sand Filters For Water
We have already implemented sand filters that all our water passes thruogh before coming to any of the buildings. We’ll be happy to show you how it works when you here! This cleans all our water to an almost pristine state. Then we use carbon filters at the kitchen outlets to take care of anything else that might be in it, just in case.
This has already been done and has been running for the 8 years. We love it! It keeps the water very clean, and gosh, does a glass of water taste great here! Luckily, all our water is gravity fed, no energy needed to move it around, too.
Re-Use Water Twice!
We always try to re-use our water twice when we can. We also collect rainwater off all our roofs, since every roof on the property is a cistern. We collect the rainwater with gutters into tanks and water our gardens with it.
For toilets, why use fresh, purified water to flush toilets? That is a sin! So we re-use gray water for toilets. We re-use shower water and hot tub water, sometimes reservoir irrigation water to supplement it by filtering it first through a sand filter and then re-using it in the toilets. What a great solution to cut our water usage in half!
We have some composting toilets around different parts of the land where there isn’t running water, but where there are water toilets, we use water that has already been used once. It works! There is never any smell and the water LOOKS clean! What a sin to flush pure water down the toilet!
